OU Wrestling Team Downs Fresno State, 23-18

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team defeated Fresno State today by a score of 23-18 in Fresno, Calif. The Sooners (5-3) used bonus points from all five winning matches to beat the Bulldogs and move the series record to 15-5 in OU's favor. Senior All-American Witt Durden, who is ranked third in the nation, defeated Ben Martinez by a 19-5 technical fall to currently hold an 11-0 record.

"I was very pleased with the aggressiveness of the five matches that we won," said head coach Jack Spates. "We scored extra points. That's what we've worked on and it's important to the team to win extra points. We will finish up our grueling double header, which builds character, tonight with Cal Poly."

Oklahoma's bonus-point run started at 125 pounds when nationally-ranked Bo Maynes recorded a major decision over Sal Gonzales, 16-7. Following Durden's 133-pound technical fall, freshman Teyon Ware major decisioned Casey Olson by a score of 13-2 at 141 pounds.

The Sooners dropped the next four matches to the Bulldogs. Senior Nate Parker was upset at 149-pounds by decision to Zhon Kuraspediani, 9-2. Oklahoma's Rafael Maturino dropped the 157-pound battle to Jim Medeiros, 7-5. Sophomore Wes Roberts forfeited to Ben Baca and senior Robbie Waller dropped a 5-1 decision to Eddie Gifford.

Senior All-American Josh Lambrecht rebounded from a loss at the Lone Star Duals to pin Fresno State's 184-pound Jatinder Singh at the :54 second mark. Senior Tom Grossman tallied the Sooner's final bonus points of the evening at 197 pounds, when he scored a major decision over Greg Gifford, 18-8. Oklahoma sophomore Joel Tapler fell by a 6-2 decision to Fresno State heavyweight Clint Walbeck.

Oklahoma will wrestle in the second dual of the day at 7:30 PST tonight against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
