Austin, Texas -  The Oklahoma men’s tennis team fell to No. 16 and arch rival Oklahoma State, 4-0, in the first round of the 2004 Big 12 Tennis Men’s Championships at the University of Texas’ Penick-Alison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.

With the loss the Sooners fall to 17-6, dropping their 13th straight Bedlam match, while the Cowboys improve to 20-5 on the year, the first 20-win season for the program since 1987.

Bedlam doubles action was intense, after Oklahoma lost at No. 3 doubles nearly an hour elapsed before the Sooners tied it up after sophomore Marek Velicka and senior Silviu Tanasoiu knocked off the 47th ranked duo of Boris Kuharic and Felipe Diaz at No. 2, 9-8 (4). This is the second consecutive match OU upset the ranked doubles team.

At the top position, senior Ondrej Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison found themselves in a tie-break situation as well, losing to OSU’s Mark Van Elden and Daniel Byrnes, 9-8 (2), to give the Cowboys a 1-0 match lead it would never relinquish.

“Doubles was close, they fought hard and had some chances and I have no regret about that,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “As far as singles, I don’t think we competed as well as we have throughout the season. I’m disappointed because I thought we would get more production out of this match.”

In singles action, Fukala was the first Sooner off the Court losing to Kuharic at the No. 2 position, handing Fukala just his third loss of the year, 6-3, 6-3. The loss drops the senior to 17-3 on the season. In a rematch of ranked players OU’s Velicka lost to Oklahoma State’s 27th-ranked Van Elden, 6-3, 6-2. To close out the match in another straight set, Tanasoiu lost to Byrnes, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5.

Next up the Sooners await a bid into the NCAA tournament which starts May 14 and OSU will play second-seeded Texas A&M tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Aggies defeated Colorado in today’s first round, 4-1, and won the only meeting with the Cowboys this season, 5-2, in Stillwater.
