NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma's women's golf team shot a first-round 310 (+26) Monday at the 15-team Northrop Grumman Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., to finish the day tied for 13th place. Monday's round, the first of three in the event, was OU's first since late October.

The tournament, which is being held at the par-71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club, boasts a talent-filled field with all 15 teams ranked in Golfweek's top-50. Three teams are ranked in the top 10.

No. 1-ranked UCLA leads the tournament after shooting an even-par 284 and is eight shots in front of second-place Duke.

"It was a tough day out there," said Veronique Drouin, head coach of the 27th-ranked Sooners. "We got off to a slow start and had to play catch-up from the beginning."

The Sooners were led by junior Taylor Schmidt and sophomore Chirapat Jao-Javanil. The pair each carded a 76 (+5) to finish the round tied for 35th place out of 80 competitors. They trail leader Rachel Walton of Denver by six strokes.

Sophomores Emily Collins and Jade Staggs each shot an 8-over 79 and ended the round in a tie for 60th place. Fellow sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot an 85 (+14) and is in 80th place.

"This is a challenging course and it can hurt your confidence, but we have 36 holes left and a lot can still happen," said Drouin.

Tuesday's second round tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT. Live stats are available on GolfStat.com.
