Women's Gymnastics Moves Up to No. 9

NORMAN, Okla. Despite losing its first competition of the season, the Oklahoma Sooners women’s gymnastics team moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest GymInfo Coaches Poll released Monday.

Two other Big 12 Conference teams hold spots in the top 10 as Nebraska moved up to No. 8 and Iowa State sits behind the Sooners in the No. 10 slot.

Steve Nunno's squad ranks in the top 25 in each discipline, highlighted by a No. 3 ranking on floor exercise. Oklahoma is also ranked sixth on uneven bars, 13th on vault and 21st on balance beam.

The Sooners have averaged a score of 195.185 through five meets this season.

Individually, sophomore Ashley Cooney and senior Erin LaBarr hold spots in the top 25.

Cooney, the sixth-ranked gymnast overall, is ranked No. 8 on vault and No. 11 on floor exercise, averaging a 9.87 score in both events. The Plano, Texas, native posted a season-high all-around score of 39.400 in the Sooners’ most recent meet against Nebraska.

LaBarr, the 17th-ranked gymnast overall, owns the No. 7 ranking on uneven bars and the No. 22 ranking on floor exercise.

Junior Kristen Cox is the only other Sooner in the polls. She is ranked 17th on floor exercise, averaging a 9.86.

The Sooners lost their first meet of the season to Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 5, 196.775-195.725, and face more competition in their next meet when they host No. 7 Georgia. The meet will take place Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
