IRVING, Texas - University of Oklahoma women's gymnast Sara Stone was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week for Jan. 11, announced by the conference Tuesday.
Stone won the individual vault title in OU's season opener against Arkansas Friday after posting a 9.875 on the apparatus. Stone also scored a 9.8 on floor to help boost OU's lead and eventual win over the Razorbacks.
Stone is currently tied for sixth in the nation individually on vault.
The award marks the second of Stone's career. As a sophomore Stone earned Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week on March 2, 2010 after posting a perfect 10.0 on vault against Michigan State the weekend prior.
Stone's 10 last season marked just the fifth time an OU gymnast reached the perfect score on vault in program history.
Iowa State's Michelle Browning and Michelle Shealy took home the conference's other weekly honors. Browning was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week, recognizing all-around competitors, while Shealy earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Stone and the Sooners continue the 2011 season Friday, Jan. 14 as OU faces N.C. State at 6 p.m., at the Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
