NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma gymnast Haley DeProspero has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI first team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
DeProspero completed her eligibility by leading the Sooners to their second straight Big 12 crown in 2009 and will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
The Van Alstyne, Texas, native was the only gymnast honored in the District VI’s University division.
Also an eight-time honoree on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, DeProspero looks to join former gymnast Brittney Koncak-Schumann as an Academic All-American under OU head coach K.J. Kindler. Koncak-Schumann earned the coveted award in both her junior and senior seasons (2006 and 2007).
DeProspero was one of a record 117 OU student-athletes to graduate during the current academic year, walking in May with a degree in zoology after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.78.
The recipient of the OU Athletic Director’s Leadership Award in 2009, DeProspero will start classes at The University of Texas at Houston Medical School in the fall.
Sharing the beam title at both the 2008 and ’09 Big 12 Championships, she was named the MVP of the 2009 Oklahoma squad, an accolade voted upon by her OU teammates. A four-time NACGC All-Academic Scholar and three-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection, DeProspero was also a 2008 CoSIDA all-district honoree.
DeProspero capped off her illustrious career with a total of 19 event wins, leading Oklahoma to four consecutive NCAA appearances including program-best finishes in 2007 and 2008.
