FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The 2011 Sooners faced their first test on Saturday as they topped the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayettville by a 3-2 score in overtime behind sophomore Bailey Boulware's game-winning goal.
"Tonight was a good test for us," said fourth-year head coach Nicole Nelson. "We were sharp for long periods of time and were able to put together a lot of quality goal scoring opportunities. Our end product was lacking which is to be expected this early."
Senior Michelle Alexander gave OU a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, while junior Dria Hampton's goal late in the second half tied the game at two.
Lisa Jett got the starting nod in goal and made nine saves as OU fired 14 shots opposite Arkansas' 16.
After the Sooners took an early 1-0 lead off Alexander's goal, Arkansas battle back to tie things at one goal apiece in the 31st minute. Less then 20 minutes into the second half, the Razorbacks took a 2-1 lead on a goal that was scored off a rebound against Jett.
Hampton provided the game-tying goal at the 74:10 mark while Boulware provided the game winner in the first three minutes in overtime.
"We were able to evaluate a lot of players and try different combinations which is the focus in an exhibition game," added Nelson. "I thought our response to going down on an own goal, having to equalize, and then win in overtime, showed good focus.
The season opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Sooners will play five of their first six games at home, including a matchup with Tennessee on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
