NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team will start the 2004 season with an annual intrasquad scrimmage. The meet will be held Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m., at Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center on the Oklahoma campus and is free to the public.
Last season the Sooners rode a seven meet winning streak, including a victory over then-No. 1 UCLA and finished 18-11 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12. OU placed second in the Big 12 Championships and fourth in the NCAA Regionals, just barely missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Finals.
The 2003 squad set itself apart from Sooners of the past in a number of ways. The Sooners broke every team scoring record except vault last season. They also are the first team in OU history to score 197 points in five straight meets. In addition they finished the home portion of the schedule undefeated and hold a win streak of 10 straight meets dating back to when Steve Nunno became co-head coach in 2001. In his Nunno’s tenure, the Sooners have not lost a regular season home meet.
OU will open up the 2004 regular season in Cancun, Mexico on January 2, at 7 p.m. in a meet with Washington, Iowa and Texas Woman’s University.
