NORMAN, Okla. -- Two members of the University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will compete in the seventh annual H.E.B Baylor Invitational this weekend as they travel to Waco, Texas, Sept. 21-23, and compete at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Representing the Sooners this weekend will be junior Rob McKenzie and sophomore Andrei Daescu. Both players will be playing for the first time this season.
"Andrei and Rob are excited to get their fall season under way and both players have had good, quality workouts leading up to this tournament," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
This is the second year in a row the Sooners have competed in Waco. Last season Marek Velicka and Ondrej Kacmar represented Oklahoma.
This year's tournament consists of 21 schools and 120 student-athletes. The field includes 25 players currently ranked among the FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings. Seven players are ranked among the ITA's Top 50.
The tournament will consist of two 64-player singles draws, green (A) and gold (B), and a 32-team draw in green doubles and 16-team gold doubles draw.
Teams participating include: Baylor, Boise State, Cal Baptist, Kentucky, UL-Lafayette, Lamar, Laredo CC, Louisville, Mississippi, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, San Diego, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio, Texas Tech, Wichita State and Wisconsin.
The Sooners will learn their draw when brackets are released later this afternoon.
"This will be as competitive as any tournament these two will compete in all season. This will be a good test to see where both players are this fall," Lockwood continued.
The Sooners made an impressive start to the fall slate last weekend as OU took home several honors at the Navy Invitational.
Sergey Avdeyev won the flight championship in No. 1 singles and Ryan Thomas won the flight championship in No. 5 singles.
The duo of Federico Chavarria and Ryan Thomas won the No. 1 doubles flight championship and Sergey Avdeyev and Jorge Villanueva of Arkansas won the flight championship in No. 3 doubles.
The Sooners continue their fall schedule on the road next weekend when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championship pre-qualifying, Sept. 29.
