A Closer Look

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Nebraska's women's gymnastics team won its fourth Big 12 title in the conference's fifth year of existence with a victory at the 2001 Championships in front of 1,145 fans at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman. The No. 4 Huskers (18-1) tallied a 197.650, edging No. 9 Iowa State (197.050). Twentieth-ranked Oklahoma (16-6) finished with a 196.700 while Missouri scored a 193.675.

Nebraska, which did not have an all-arounder compete, won two of the four team events and was led by Bree Dority. The sophomore scored a perfect 10.0 to claim the uneven parallel bars as well as a first-place tie on the balance beam (9.950). Sophomore A.J. Lamb tied Dority on the beam and sophomore Jessica Wertz finished in a tie for the top spot on vault (9.875).

Iowa State (11-6) led after three events but fell short in the final rotation. The Cyclones received strong performances from juniors Shelly Kringen and Sissy Huey, who finished one and two in the all-around with scores of 39.550 and 39.475, respectively. Huey won the floor exercise (9.950) and Kringen tied for first on vault. Also, junior Stephanie Sweitzer was one of three first-place gymnasts on beam.

The Sooners' highest scores came from junior Leticia Ishii, who placed third in the all-around (39.375), and sophomore Patricia Aoki and junior Mariana Goncalves, who finished in a second-place tie on the floor exercise with a 9.925.

The Tigers (4-14) were led by sophomore Alina Hamm, who tallied a 39.075 all-around score.

Oklahoma's Becky Switzer, who coached her final home meet, and Steve Nunno were named Big 12 Coaches of the Year.
