NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma wrestling team (1-0) will attempt to win its 11th straight team title at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic this Saturday, Nov. 14 in Brockport, N.Y., inside Tuttle North Gymnasium.
The 18th-ranked Sooners are coming off a 27-10 victory over Central Oklahoma in their opener.
“This weekend will be a great challenge for our team, especially our young guys,” head coach Jack Spates said. “This is an extremely talented field that we will be competing against so our guys are going to have to come to wrestle. We have recognized some areas after our season opener where we need to improve and our staff is looking forward to seeing our guys adjust and improve.”
Joining Oklahoma in this year’s field is 2009 NCAA runner-up Ohio State, Edinboro (sixth in 2009), Kent State, Rutgers, Army, Buffalo, Liberty and the College of Brockport.
A total of 19 wrestlers competing this weekend finished in the top 20 in last year’s final individual rankings.
Last season Oklahoma claimed the team title with 140 points. Edinboro (105 points), Central Michigan (103), Kent State (99) and Hofstra (92.5) rounded out the top five.
Oklahoma wrestlers Zack Bailey and Eric Lapotsky claimed individual crowns at 141 and 197 pounds, respectively. Shane Vernon (157 pounds) and Jeff James (174) each earned the silver medal.
