The Oklahoma women's soccer team notched its first victory of the 2000 season when it defeated Oral Roberts, 3-1, Sunday night in the final game of the AT&T Wireless Soccer Challenge in Edmond.
Oklahoma (1-1) was led by forwards Jonette Coquat and Heather Martinelli. Coquat recorded a goal and two assists while Martinelli tallied a goal and one assist in the victory over the Golden Eagles(0-2).
Oklahoma struck early, just 2:52 into the game, when Coquat scored OU's first goal of the season off a pass from Martinelli. The two teamed up again for the second goal, at the 22:25 mark, but it was Martinelli who registered the goal from a Coquat assist.
The Sooners made it 3-0 when Logan Womack notched the first goal of her career at 75:28 off Coquat's second assist of the night.
Erin Hartog's goal for ORU, from Tesse Long, came at 85:54 and spoiled Oklahoma's bid for a shutout.
"There were two things I liked in tonight's game: our energy level and some of the individual play," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "I think tonight's performance is a sample of what teams are going to see from us this year."
Coquat's four-point performance pushed her into a first-place tie in three categories on Oklahoma's all-time career records chart. She is tied with former Sooner Heather Morrison in goals scored (14), assists (9) and points (37).
The Sooners' Brittany Davis, Heidi Martinson and Bridgette Smith were all-tournament selections while Davis was named the tournament's defensive MVP.
Tulsa, which beat Oklahoma, 2-0, Friday night, defeated Oklahoma State, 5-0, in Sunday's first game.
Oklahoma travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a pair of games next weekend. The Sooners play New Mexico Friday at 7 p.m. and conclude the trip against Colorado College Sunday at 7 p.m.
