NORMAN, Okla. The OU men’s tennis team picked up its first win of the two-match weekend Thursday at the Homewood Flossmore Racket Club in Homewood, Ill.
Oklahoma squared off against Chicago State at 11 a.m. and went undefeated in both singles and doubles play.
“It was a good match after a long road trip,” OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood said. “I felt that our players were tired, but they fought hard.”
The Sooners picked up easy wins in all six singles matches with Vaclav Kucera at the No. 1 spot, No. 55 Andrei Daescu at No. 2 and Marek Velicka competing at No. 3.
In doubles play Velicka teamed up with sophomore Sergey Avdeyev at No.1. The tandem defeated the Chicago State pair of Praeowo Imanuel and Cameron Shanklin 8-4.
Also competing in doubles were Ondrej Kacmar and Sergey Avdeyev who defeated the Bears duo of Nicolas Ortega and Jonathan Sutjiaei, 8-5. Daescu and Kucera were slated to compete at the No. 3 spot, but did not play.
The match marks the fourth consecutive win for the Sooners who are 5-1 on the season.
Oklahoma will face the No. 45 Northwestern Wildcats in its second match of the weekend.
“We are looking forward to playing Northwestern,” Lockwood said.
The two teams are scheduled to compete at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. Results will be posted on SoonerSports.com as soon as they are available. Live scoring of the match can be viewed at www.nusports.com
