NORMAN, Okla. - SoonerSports.com recently caught up with senior Federico Chavarria of the men's tennis team to see how school is going and to find out what he is doing to get ready for the fall portion of the tennis schedule.
Chavarria is a native of San Jose, Costa Rica, and is one of two seniors on this year's squad.
SoonerSports.com will post a Q&A with each returning member of the men's tennis team leading up to the first tournament of the fall season next week. The Sooners travel to Annapolis, Md., Sept. 14-16, for the Navy Invitational.
Chavarria talks about the music rotation on his iPod, his favorite thing about Norman and what other sports he enjoys besides tennis:
SS: What did you do this summer to sharpen your game?
FC: I practiced and played in Europe with very experienced players on different surfaces.
SS: What are you doing with your free time now that you are back in school?
FC: I like to hang out with my friends and just relax and chill.
SS: You have been in Oklahoma for about three years now. What is your favorite thing about Norman and the University of Oklahoma?
FC: Aside from the strong academic programs that are offered the thing I like the best are the strong athletic traditions we have here. That is one of the things that made the decision easy for me to come to Norman and be a Sooner. And Norman has such genuinely nice people.
SS: What personal goals do you have between now and the first official practice of the season?
FC: I would like to get in better shape so that I can make it through the grind of a long season. I would also like to become a tougher player both mentally and physically.
SS: What kind of workouts do you do to keep yourself in tennis shape?
FC: I concentrate on getting an all-around tennis practice in and I also make sure I hit a lot of balls.
SS: How have the first three weeks of class been going?
FC: Class is going awesome and it is great to be back in the classroom.
SS: What kind of music do you listen to?
FC: I like listening to a little bit of all kinds of music.
SS: What artists are in heavy rotation on your iPod?
FC: D.J. Tieslo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, ATB and lots of latin music.
SS: Who is the biggest tennis celebrity you have met?
FC: David Nalbandian and Gaslon Gaudio.
SS: If you weren't playing tennis, what would you play?
SS: What TV shows do you watch regularly?
FC: I love Entourage and Family Guy.
SS: Why did you choose OU?
FC: Because the academics are very strong and the tennis program is awesome. And the wonderful traditions the univeristy has.
SS: What is your favorite thing about Norman?
FC: I love Norman because it is a small city but it has all of the features of a big city.
