Sooners Edged Out by Cowgirls, 4-3

STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker to in-state rival Oklahoma State Wednesday afternoon, 4-3. 

Oklahoma State earned the doubles point and early lead, bringing the match score to 1-0.  The doubles point turned out to be the difference maker, with both rival schools claiming three singles points each.

OU’s only win in doubles came at the No. 2 spot behind sophomore Tara Eckel and freshman Marie-Pier Huet.  The duo defeated Iryna Khatsko and Alisa Buslaieva of Oklahoma State, 8-5.  Eckel and Huet are 13-3 on the season as a pair and have won 11 of their last 12 matches.

 “With two evenly matched teams I knew that the doubles point would be a huge factor in the outcome of this match,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We could not take advantage of some significant leads and OSU took full advantage of it. “

In singles, OSU claimed the first singles point with a win at the No. 3 spot, bringing the match score to 2-0 with the Cowgirls leading.  The Sooners claimed the next two singles matches, at the No. 1 spot and the No. 4 spot, to tie the Cowgirls, 2-2.  Sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu provided OU with its first match point, defeating JoAnne Karaitiana of OSU, 6-2, 6-3.  With the win, Constantinescu is now 16-2 this season at the No. 1 spot.

Freshman Marie-Pier Huet defeated OSU’s Maryna Tkachenko, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot to tie the match, 2-2.  OSU claimed the point at the No. 2 spot with Nataliya Shatkovkaya defeating OU sophomore Maria Kalashnikova, 6-2, 6-4. 

Freshman Peta Maree Lancaster tied the match again, 3-3, with a win over OSU’s Alisa Buslaieva, 6-3, 6-1.  OSU claimed the final singles point at the No. 6 spot to clinch the match, 4-3.  OSU’s Sasha Belova defeated OU senior Brittany Baldy, 6-3, 6-3.

Wednesday’s match was the second time in Big 12 play that Oklahoma has lost by one point.  Wednesday’s match was also Oklahoma’s final road match of the season, the Sooners have played 15 of their 20 matches on the road.

The Sooners will return to action on April 18 and April 19 in Norman, Okla., Oklahoma will face Baylor on Saturday at noon and Texas Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Both matches will take place at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
