NORMAN, Okla. – Three Oklahoma men’s golfers were among 41 student-athletes named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Senior Chris Wilson (zoology) and junior Riley Pumphrey (finance) earned first-team honors, while senior Ryan Sirman (business) was named to the second team.
"We're very proud of our golfers," said OU Head Coach Ryan Hybl. "We strive for excellence both on and off the course, and we have a great group of guys who can do that. What an amazing accomplishment."
The academic honor is the second for both Sirman and Pumphrey, as they both were named to the 2009 academic all-league squad.
Wilson and Nebraska’s Brett Sundberg were the only two Big 12 men’s golfers posting a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
To qualify for the Academic All-Big 12 Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulatively or over each of the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team includes those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
