TULSA, Okla. -- Andrei Daescu continued his solid play Friday morning in the round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla., at the 2007 ITA Central Regional Championships.
Daescu defeated Christopher Nott of Arkansas, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals where he will face Edson Abrao of Arkansas Little Rock at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
"Andrei played very solid tennis in his singles competition and defeated a very talented player in Christopher Nott," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
The doubles team of Federico Chavarria and Daescu continued their strong play by defeating Igor Nikitin and Marko Ballok of Arkansas Little Rock, 8-3, in the round of 16. The Sooner duo then defeated Juan Carlos Nunez and German Perez from Arkansas Little Rock, 8-1.
"Our doubles team got better and better with each set today and I look forward to watching them continue their excellent play tomorrow against some very good competition," Lockwood continued.
With Friday's victories, the Sooners move into the semifinals Saturday morning immediately after singles competition. Chavarria and Daescu will square off with Christopher Nott and Dmitriy Lebedev of Arkansas.
"I am very pleased with how all three of our guys have been competing. This tournament is very challenging and it is very rewarding to watch our players play great tennis," Lockwood said.
The tournament will run through Sunday, Oct. 28, with the winners of the singles and doubles competition receiving draws in the ITA National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1-4.
The winner and runner-up of the tournament in singles competition will advance to Columbus along with the winning team in doubles action.
The Sooners are nearing the end of the fall slate with competition remaining following the ITA National Indoor Championships. Oklahoma will compete in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 2-4.
