NORMAN, Okla. – Juniors Amber Flores and Lindsey Vandever each had a home run and Oklahoma’s pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts as the eighth-ranked Sooners downed North Texas, 8-1 Wednesday afternoon. OU (27-8) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to defeat the Mean Green (17-13).
In the first inning, sophomore Chana’e Jones recorded a one-out single down the right field line and scored on Flores’ 10th home run of the year over the left field fence. Senior Samantha Ricketts singled to left center and then scored on Vandever’s home run to right center. The shot was Vandever’s sixth of the season, tying her season best set in each of the two previous seasons and her first since March 4.
In the third, Flores drew a walk to lead off the inning and Ricketts singled to right center to move Flores to third. Vandever reached on an error that scored Flores before the inning ended.
OU tacked on three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Dani Dobbs was hit by a pitch and sophomore Haley Anderson singled down the left field line. Sophomore Krystle Huey then sacrificed to advance Dobbs and Anderson into scoring position. Jones reached on a fielder’s choice and Flores was hit by a pitch. Ricketts reached on an error to score Anderson. Vandever then reached on an error to score Jones. Senior Jeannie Douglas walked to bring in Flores.
The Sooner pitchers were dominant on the mound. After issuing a leadoff walk to Megan Rupp, OU starter D.J. Mathis settled down to allow one home run – a solo shot by Lisa Johnson in the second inning. It was the only hit put up on the board by the Mean Green. Mathis walked three and struck out nine before turning the reigns over to freshman Kirsten Allen.
K. Allen saw 1.2 innings of work, striking out three batters. Freshman Allee Allen pitched the final inning, striking out two of the three batters she faced. The 14 strikeouts recorded by the trio were the most this season.
Ricketts and Vandever each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Vandever drove in two on the afternoon. Flores was 1-for-1 with one walk and two hit by pitches. Flores scored three runs. Anderson tallied a 2-for-3 day, scoring one run. Jones went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and sophomore Wendy Trott drew one walk on the afternoon.
The Sooners return to Big 12 action this weekend, taking on Texas in a two-game series in Austin. The Red River rivals face off Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon CT.
