NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad, ranked preseason No. 18, kicks off the 2009-10 season this Wednesday, Nov. 11, when it travels to Edmond to take on the University of Central Oklahoma inside Hamilton Field House at 7 p.m.
"We are really excited about this week's meet because it is the first of the year and because it is against another Oklahoma team with a great wrestling tradition," OU head coach Jack Spates said. "There should be some great matches. Our lineup isn't set, so every time our guys step out on the mat it is an evaluation."
The Sooners have five Sooners individually ranked to begin the season, headlined by defending Big 12 champion Kyle Terry, ranked No. 6 at 149 pounds. Also in the top 10 are Eric Lapotsky, slated No. 8 at 197 pounds, and No. 9 Jeff James at 174 pounds. Chad Terry is No. 13 at 157 pounds and Nathan Fernandez rounds out the list ranked No. 15 among heavyweights.
Oklahoma recorded a 39-0 defeat of the Bronchos in last year's season opener and leads the overall series by a 41-8-1 margin.
The Bronchos are led by head coach David James, now in his 28th season at UCO. His overall record of 318-111-5 makes him the winningest coach in school history and one of just 35 coaches in the history of collegiate wrestling to notch over 300 victories.
Last season, the Bronze and Blue collected an 11-6-1 overall record, marking the ninth straight season of 10-plus wins. Wednesday also marks UCO's first dual of the 2009-10 campaign.
