ARDMORE, Okla. Led once again by Big 12 runner-up Brodie Flanders, the University of Oklahoma men’s golf team finished in third place at The Maxwell at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla., Sunday.

The Sooners recorded a team total of 273 (-7) in Sunday’s final round to finish at 815 (-25), 30 strokes behind team champion and tournament host Oklahoma State.

Flanders, a senior from Petitcodiac, New Brunswick, shot a final-round 68 and tied for 10th place at 209 (-1).  Flanders’ 68 was the third-lowest score posted on Sunday.

Sophomore Phillip Bryan, who recorded a career-best 11th place finish at the Big 12 Championships, turned in another strong performance finishing 13th.

Senior Shawn LaFontaine posted a one-under 69 on Sunday to finish at five-over-par for the tournament and in a tie for 34th.

Junior Nick Sheedy and senior Justin Fraley were tied for 49th.  Fraley shot a final-round 74, while Sheedy posted a six-over 76.

The third place finish was Oklahoma’s fifth top-five finish this spring and marked the Sooners’ best finish at The Maxwell since finishing third in 2004.  OU finished sixth at last year’s event.

Oklahoma State took home its fifth consecutive Maxwell title, outpacing Baylor by four strokes with a tournament record 55-under-par total of 785.

The Cowboys also had the tournament medalist in redshirt freshman Jonathan Moore.  Moore, the 2006 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, fired rounds of 64, 66 and 66 to earn the individual title by seven shots over teammate Zack Robinson.

Oklahoma set a new season-best with a 269 (-11) in the second round, replacing the 279 first-round score from the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate, Feb. 8.  The team total of 815 also represented a new record for 2006.  OU’s previous low 54-hole total was 858 at the Big 12 Championships.

The Maxwell marked the Sooners final tune-up before NCAA postseason play.  OU will head to the NCAA Central Regional hosted by Cleveland State University, May 18-21 at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
