Oklahoma returns to Big 12 Conference competition when Iowa State comes to town on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Howard McCasland Field House.
Oklahoma and Iowa State are tied for the eighth spot in the Amateur Wrestling News poll which will make for an entertaining dual on Friday. The Sooners all-time record against the Cyclones is 33-40-3. On Saturday the Sooners will take on the Wolfpack at 7 p.m., also in the Howard McCasland Field House. Oklahoma and NC State have met on five previous occasions with the Sooners winning all five.
Sooners Hold Off Arizona State
The ninth ranked Oklahoma wrestling team defeated No. 13 Arizona State, 22-18, Saturday night at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners win improved their record to 12-4 and keeps their undefeated home record intact.
The Sooners jumped out to a 13-0 lead winning their first three matches by two major decisions and one technical fall. The Sooners and the Sundevils then split the next two matches making the score 16-3. Arizona State won the next two matches to draw closer at 16-9, until Teyon Ware pinned his opponent at the 3:17 mark after leading the match, 4-0. That put the score at 22-9 in Oklahoma’s favor. It would be all the Sooners needed to win the dual. Oklahoma would hold on dropping the next two by a decision and a fall to make the final 22-18.
After returning from injury sophomore Teyon Ware has rolled off 15 consecutive wins all in dual competition. Counting Ware’s wins from last season he has a 35 match win streak. Ware’s last lost came on Jan. 8 2003 against Dana Holland of Arizona State, 6-4. Ware, ranked No. 1 in the 141 pound weight class, recorded the final win for the Sooners against Arizona State. Ware would pin Jeremy Mendoza at the 3:17 mark to record his fourth pin of the year which leads the team tied with Jeff Ecklof for falls in dual competition.
