Dec. 12, 2001
NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma soccer team has recently announced its 2002 schedule and it appears to be one of the most difficult in school history. Of the 19 teams on the slate, seven qualified for the NCAA playoffs this year and three finished the season ranked in the top 10.
The most challenging addition to the schedule was Santa Clara, the newly-crowned national champions. OU will take on the Broncos Sept. 22 in Stanford, Calif. Two days before the Santa Clara game, the Sooners will play Stanford. The Cardinal finished the season ranked ninth nationally and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.
Some of the most prominent home games on the schedule include Southern Methodist (Sept. 13), Texas (Oct. 18) and Texas A&M (Oct. 20), all postseason quailifiers in 2001. The Aggies advanced to the Elite Eight and ended the year ranked seventh.
Kansas (Oct. 13) and Nebraska (Oct. 27), both NCAA playoff teams, are two of the Sooners' more challenging road games.
"To reach the level to compete with anybody, the schedule has to reflect that," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "Without a doubt, we feel we can compete next year. These are the teams we need to be playing."
Oklahoma will open the season on Aug. 30 at Tulsa while SMU will be the home opener.
The Sooners produced their best season in school history in 2001 (11-7-1) and earned a berth in the Big 12 Tournament for the second consecutive season.
