OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Oklahoma advanced four wrestlers to the round of 16 at the 2010 NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., Thursday morning.  Kyle Terry, Shane Vernon, Tyler Caldwell and Eric Lapotsky advanced in the championship bracket, while six other Sooners are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Oklahoma, who is one of just four schools at the NCAAs with 10 qualifiers, currently stands tied for 10th with Minnesota and Missouri entering session two, which commences at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening. Iowa stands first with 21.5 points.

“It was a tough opening round,” OU head coach Jack Spates said.  “We started off slow but we battled back.  Our guys’ attitudes are good and the ones who lost this morning are ready to battle back. This is a team that has wrestled hard all year long and that is what I anticipate seeing the rest of the way.”

Third-seeded Terry, coming off of his second-straight Big 12 title, was the first Sooner to advance to the second round for the Sooners.  Terry fell behind, 2-0, after an early takedown in the first by Penn’s Cesar Grajales but stormed back to score two takedowns of his own to win, 6-3.

Within seconds, Vernon (157 pounds) and Caldwell (165) posted opening wins of their own over Daryl Cocozzo and No. 12 Paul Young, respectively.  Vernon rallied to win, 4-3, with a third-quarter takedown and Caldwell used a three-point nearfall in the final period to post the upset-win, 5-2.

Sixth-seeded Sooner Eric Lapotsky powered his way into the second round with a pin over Matt Powless of Indiana.  The 197-pound senior needed just one period (2:19) to score his team-leading 10th fall of the season.

Jarrod Patterson, fresh off a Big 12 title at 125 pounds, fell victim to Brad Pataky of Penn State, 6-4.  The Nittany Lion surged ahead after a second period three-point nearfall and fended off the ninth-seeded Sooner for the remainder of the match.

Fifth-seeded Borislav Novachkov was too much for Kendric Maple at 133 pounds, as the wrestler from Cal Poly ran out in front with a 6-0 after two periods and held on to win, 6-3.

After posting a pig-tail win versus Ken Hashimoto of Northern Colorado, 4-0, No. 5 Zack Bailey was upset versus Lehigh’s Seth Ciasulli, 4-3.  Ciasulli scored a takedown with eight seconds remaining in the match to steal the victory and send Bailey to the consolation bracket.

Jeff James was then handed a 5-3 loss by Jaroin Beets of Northern Illinois at 174 pounds and No. 11 Dave Erwin blanked Erich Schmidtke at 184 pounds, 4-0.

Heavyweight Nathan Fernandez failed to rally against No. 10 Dominick Russo, losing by one point, 3-2, after a riding time point was awarded to the Rutgers wrestler.
