Lockwood Picks Up 300th Win

NORMAN, Okla.The No. 31 Oklahoma men’s tennis team defeated No. 33 Texas Tech (4-3) in its final Big 12 match of the season. The match was slated to begin at 5 p.m., but was delayed until 6:30 p.m. due to rain.

Oklahoma began the match picking up the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles slots.

At the No. 2 slot, Sophomore Rob McKenzie and freshman Vaclav Kucera downed Tech's Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic. Competing at No. 3 doubles, senior Marek Velicka and junior Ryan Thomas dropped an 8-3 decision Raider's Teddy DiBlasi and Dimitrio Martinez.

In singles competion Velicka upset No. 79 Martinez at the No. 2 slot. Velicka downed Martinez in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. 

McKenzie defeated Tech's Breler in two quick sets at the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-2.

The Sooners' fourth point came at the No. 6 slot in a three set match. Junior Federico Chavarria squared off against Milos Kustudija, dropping the first match 6-7. After the loss, Chavarria came back to defeat Kustudija in the final two sets 6-1, 7-5.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play Friday, April 20, but postponed the match due to severe wind conditions.

The Sooners ended the regular season 18-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The win over the Raiders marks OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood’s 300th career victory at Oklahoma.
The results of the match determined the final seeds for the Big 12 tournament which is slated to begin Friday, April 26 at 9 a.m. Oklahoma comes into the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will square off against the No. 4 seeded Nebraska in its first match.

The Sooners have faced the Cornhuskers twice this season. Oklahoma defeated Nebraska in its first match of its 2007 campaign, shutting out the Cornhuskers 4-0 in the Central ITA Regional. The second time the two teams met, Nebraska upset OU with a 5-2 win in its first Big 12 match.

Nebraska rounded out its regular season 9-10 and 2-4 against conference opponents. The Huskers are ranked 56th in the latest ITA poll.

The two teams will square off at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. at 3 p.m. The winner of the match will face No. 1 seed Baylor Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Results will be posted on SoonerSports.com as soon as they become available.
