NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma volleyball team opens the 2010 season this weekend, hosting the Nike Invitational at McCasland Field House. Action begins Friday evening with UT-Arlington facing Miami (Fla.) at 5 p.m. CT, followed by Oklahoma and Wichita State at 7 p.m. CT.

Matches continue Saturday with Wichita State/Miami at 10 a.m. and OU and UT-Arlington at noon. UT-Arlington takes on Wichita State at 5 p.m. and the Sooners close the event against the Hurricanes at 7 p.m.

After a season that resulted in another trip to the NCAA Tournament, OU hopes to build off that success in 2010. Head coach Santiago Restrepo returns nine veterans and welcomes seven newcomers. With all but one position player returning, the Sooners are poised to impress this season.

Among the nine returning players, three earned individual honors in 2009. Junior Suzy Boulavsky was named honorable mention all-region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Junior Brianne Barker and senior Francie Ekwerekwu earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors.

Ekwerekwu Named Lowe's Finalist

From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in mid-October.  Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.  The winner will be announced at the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.

Duo Named Preseason All-Big 12
Senior Francie Ekwerekwu was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 preseason team and junior Brianne Barker was named to the team, as well. Both Barker and Ekwerekwu earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors last season.
