NORMAN, Okla.- Talk around the Oklahoma volleyball team this fall has been about the dynamic newcomers added to the squad. Saturday afternoon in the Red-White Volleyball Scrimmage the newcomers validated the talk. Freshmen Joanna Schmitt and Laura Tomes (Red) led all players with 12 kills apiece, while senior-transfer Kelly McCarter (Red) turned in a match-high 27 assists.
"Laura hit .667 with 12 kills," said OU head coach Kalani Mahi, "there isn't much else that needs to be said about her performance. Joanna took some good, heavy swings and turned in a lot of emotional plays. Sheena (Werling) had a really good scrimmage, especially passing where she came up with big plays at crucial moments."
The Red squad, composed of Tomes, Schmitt, McCarter, Werling, Jennifer Mosso, Kelli Albers and Stephanie Tengram, won all three games. Schmitt led the Red squad to early leads in the first two games as they would go on to win 30-27, 30-23.
In the final frame Tomes, who added four block assists to her offensive totals, led the charge as Red battled from behind the entire game. Tomes's accuracy at middle blocker- she hit .667 (12K-0E-18TA)- coupled with the quarterbacking of McCarter were the deciding factors in the 30-28 game three victory.
"Overall, I felt good about the way we played," said Mahi. "We had a bit of nerves early but once things settled down they played great. This team is playing at a much higher level than any squad I've had at OU."
The White squad was led by senior Christina Maynes (eight kills, seven digs) and sophomore-transfer Daphne Leach (six kills, nine digs). Freshmen setters Rachel Jackson and Anna Monsen turned in 13 and eight assists, respectively. Jackson also contributed three block assists, while Monsen turned in the match's only solo block. Junior-transfer Keri Coats turned in four kills, four service aces and two block assists.
The match was decided at the net with Red hitting .189 (42-11-111), while White hit .024 (26-24-82). White led with 32 digs, as opposed to 26 from Red, and equaled the opposition with seven service aces.
Along with Maynes, Jackson, Monsen and Coats on the white squad were Jennifer Adams, Yvette Villanueva and Daphne Leach.
The OU volleyball team begins the regular season Aug. 29 in Pullman, Wash., where it faces Washington State in the Cougar Classic. The home opener and Red River Rivalry between OU and Texas is set for Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., inside the McCasland Field House.
