Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win of Spring

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opened its spring season by defeating New Mexico State, 5-4, Friday night at the Santa Fe Club in Santa Fe, N.M. In their first victory over New Mexico State since 1997, the Sooners picked up wins in three singles matches and in two out of three doubles matches. The Sooners hold a 1-0 record for the spring season while New Mexico State fell to 3-2.

Picking up the win at No. 1 singles was Oklahoma junior Viviana Mracnova who defeated Elke Blodau in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Angela Stroup won in the No. 4 singles slot, 6-3, 6-2, for the Sooners while fellow senior Kristin Guilford was forced to a tie breaker in both sets (7-6, 7-6) of her victory.

Entering the final doubles match tied at four points apiece, the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Annette Bryntesson and senior Jennie Hamilton clinched the OU team win with its 8-6 victory.

The Sooners will host Wichita State in Oklahoma City, Okla., Friday, Feb. 4.
