COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Oklahoma Sooners (11-13, 1-5 Big 12) were defeated by the No. 3-seed Oklahoma State Cowboys (15-8, 4-2 Big 12) on Friday, 6-1, during quarterfinal action at the 2008 Big 12 Tennis Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M University campus.

"I am proud of my players, we fought hard from the opening point of doubles. They beat us pretty decisively a couple of weeks ago in doubles, and we reversed that," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said.

The Sooners opened the day winning two of the three doubles matches.  That gave Oklahoma a 1-0 advantage over the Cowboys.

At No. 1 doubles Federico Chavarria and Andrei Daescu, ranked in a tie at No. 49, defeated No. 17 Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, 8-5. Securing the point for Oklahoma was Sergey Avdeyev and Alex Joitoiu with their win at No. 3 doubles.  The Sooner duo defeated Anton Bobytskyi and Ivan Puchkarov, 8-6.

At No. 2 doubles Ryan Thomas and Vlad Marinescu were facing Dmytro Petrov and Igor Sobolta of OSU.  The match was not completed due to OU winning the doubles point after the No. 3 match.

"We had three goals today. I thought if we got all three of those goals we would win, if we got two of those three goals, we could extend the match a little bit longer," Lockwood added.

The Cowboys took the No. 1 and 2 singles matches to take the lead away from OU at 2-1.  OSU continued their solid play and finished the match taking the No. 4 and 6 matches to advance to the semifinals.

"We actually only achieved one of our three goals, but I give Oklahoma State credit. They are a top-20 team and rightfully so. We gave a great effort and we did the best we could and I'm proud of the players," Lockwood added.

Daescu now awaits the NCAA selection process to determine where he will go as an individual for the 2008 NCAA Tennis Championships.  The 2008 NCAA Division I men's and women's tennis selection announcements will air between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, Tuesday, April 29, on ESPNews.

In addition, the ESPNews audio signal is available on the ESPNews channel on XM Radio and SIRIUS Radio.
