Golden Hurricane Down Sooners

TULSA, Okla. - No. 47 Oklahoma (4-3) lost 5-2 to the No. 23 Tulsa Golden Hurricane (10-2) on Thursday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Tulsa took the early lead as No. 38 Arnau Brugues of Tulsa upset No. 34 Andrei Daescu in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

No. 96 Sergey Avdeyev was the only Sooner to record a singles victory as he defeated Victor Kolik, 6-4, 6-7, (2-7), 1-0 (12-10) at No. 3 singles.

"We faced an excellent tennis program today and they showed why they are ranked in the top-25," head coach Paul Lockwood said.  "I want to give Tulsa a lot of credit because they played some very good tennis. They really took it to us early in singles and that was the match."

Federico Chavarria and Daescu, ranked No. 40 in doubles play upset No. 34 Andy Connelly and Ross Cunningham, 8-4 in No. 1 doubles.

The No. 3 doubles duo of Ionut Beleleu and Ryan Thomas defeated Kolik and Alberto Sottocorno, 9-8, (9-7).

With the two doubles victories the Sooners took the doubles point.

"We look forward to Sunday as we play our first true home match and we look forward to seeing a lot of our fans coming out to support us," Lockwood continued.

Next, the Sooners host Oral Roberts and East Central on Sunday, March 2, for the first home matches of the 2008 season at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
