AUSTIN, Texas – The 20th-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team fell to No. 15 Texas Tech, 5-2, Friday in the first round of the Big 12 Championships held on the campus of the University of Texas.

The Sooners (16-7, 2-5) dropped their third match of the season to the Red Raiders and second ever in the Big 12 Championships.

“I thought we played really hard,” head coach John Roddick said. “We had lost to Tech twice already, and now three times.  We know they are a little bit better than us on most days, but at the same time we know we had chances.  We have played them close every time, but our team fought really hard and that’s all you can ask out of the guys.”

Texas Tech jumped ahead of Oklahoma early after staking wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to claim the doubles point. OU’s 27th-ranked tandem, comprised of senior Andrei Daescu and freshman Costin Paval, were up 7-5 in their match against Tech’s No. 17-ranked Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia, at the No. 1 spot, before action was suspended.

“We were down after the doubles and drew the match out,” said Roddick. “Sometimes in tennis you are going to win some of those and lose some of those but we fought hard.  There is not a lot we can look back on and change, and from a coaching standpoint that is not always a bad thing.”

In singles action the Sooners fell behind 2-0 after junior Ionut Beleleu (No. 66) fell to TT’s Carvalho at the No. 1 spot.

OU junior David Pultr gave the Sooners their first point after he downed Tech’s Andre Stabile, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 position.

Freshman Lawrence Formentera evened the score at two-all after he ousted Raphael Pfister in straight-sets at the No. 6 spot.

However, OU dropped straight-set matches at the No. 5 and 2 positions to give the Red Raiders the 4-2 victory.

Next up, Oklahoma awaits to see where they will land in the 2010 NCAA Championships. The 2010 NCAA Division I men's and women's tennis selection show will air Tuesday, May 4, on ESPNews at 4 p.m. CST.
