NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma senior center fielder Kristin Vesely has been tabbed the Big 12 Conference’s Co-Player of the Week for her efforts in games played Feb. 14-19. Vesely shared the honor with Texas’ Tina Boutelle.
It marks the third Big 12 Player of the Week honor for Vesely after she collected two accolades last season. Texas senior Cat Osterman was named the conference’s pitcher of the week.
Vesely led No. 10 Oklahoma to a 5-0-1 record last week. She was 12-for-16 at the plate while recording a .750 batting average, including nine RBI and 10 runs scored. The Phoenix, Ariz. native tallied two doubles and a triple in addition to compiling a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .818 on-base percentage.
In game two of the Central Arkansas doubleheader, Vesely went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base to lead the Sooners (9-1-1) to a 9-0 run-rule victory. Vesely followed this performance with another perfect outing against North Dakota State in the twin bill’s second contest. She went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, including a triple. In the outfield, Vesely was errorless while collecting seven putouts on the week.
“The great thing about her is that we can use her in so many dimensions,” head coach Patty Gasso said. “She’s one of the purest hitters I’ve seen and her impressive performances at the plate have been contagious to the rest of team. It’s a well-deserved honor and hopefully she can continue to add great contributions at the plate.”
Through Oklahoma’s 11 games of the 2006 season, the USA Player of the Year Watch List candidate has recorded an impressive .633 batting average and leads the squad with 14 RBI, 19 hits, including six extra-base hits. Vesely is also riding a team-best six-game hitting streak.
Vesely became the fourth Sooner this week to be named a Big 12 Player of the Week as baseball’s Joseph Hughes picked up the same honor this week, in addition to Michael Neal (men’s basketball) and Courtney Paris (women’s basketball) being selected as Big 12 Rookies of the Week.
The No. 10 Oklahoma softball team will get back to action this weekend as it heads to the Palm Springs Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., for six games Feb. 23-26. The Sooners will open tournament action with a 10 p.m. (CST) meeting against No. 18 Oregon in a rematch of last year’s Regional 14 Championship game that resulted in an OU victory.
