NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma baseball team, under first-year head coach Sunny Golloway, was ranked No. 29 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s top-40 preseason poll released Friday.  OU, who returns 19 letterwinners (12 seniors) from last season’s 35-26 team, is one of five Big 12 schools that were picked in the preseason poll.

The defending national champion, Texas, was tabbed No. 1, while Nebraska was No. 4, Missouri No. 14, and Baylor No. 23.  Including Big 12 foes, OU will face off against 10 squads ranked in the poll during the 2006 regular season.

OU ended the 2005 regular season with a 10-2 record under Golloway, then an interim head coach.  That team closed out the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the Big 12 Conference (fifth-place finish) and made the program’s second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, a first since 1997-98.

“I think probably the most exciting aspect about this year’s team is that we return so much experience,”  said Golloway.  “I can not remember having this many veterans returning for a season.  We have eight position starters coming back, three hurlers that made regular weekend starts a season ago, our closer and a deep bench.

“With a good majority of that team returning in 2006, we have a tremendous opportunity to feed off last year’s late-season success and make this a special year.”

Among some of the key players returning this season are two 2005 MLB draft choices in Daniel McCutchen (12th round) and Ryan Rohlinger (21st round) and a freshman All-American (Baseball America) in Kody Kaiser.

The Sooners open the 2006 season at the Texas-Pan American Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, against Texas State on Feb. 3.  The opener is followed by contests against host UTPA and Lamar, Feb. 4 and 5 respectively.  The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
