OKLAHOMA vs. UCONN
TUESDAY, JAN. 7, 2003
LLOYD NOBLE CENTER - NORMAN, OKLA.
OU HEAD COACH KELVIN SAMPSON
On the win:
"I was encouraged by our defense in the second half. We made some tough shots. Our kids overcame some adversity and won. Connecticut was averaging 90 points per game and we came out and held them to 63."
"Every game teaches you something. This was the first game all year that I had to call timeouts to rest us."
On Hollis Price:
"Hollis came through tonight with his ability to make plays and do the right things. He's a four-year starter. Hollis is Hollis. When I called timeout, Hollis made sure everyone was ready. He said we don't have a choice between winning and losing. We're going to win this thing."
OU SENIOR HOLLIS PRICE
On the game:
"I thought we played well, especially in the first half. We let down a little bit in the second half but we found a way to win. Blake Johnston came in and gave us positive minutes. Quannas got hurt tonight and was still able to come back and help us when we needed him."
On Quannas White returning to the game in the second half:
"Him coming back was huge. He got right back in and knocked down those two free throws and we got out of our scoring slump."
OU SENIOR QUANNAS WHITE:
On the game:
"This game is going to give us a lot of respect around the nation. This is a big win for us. The coaching staff did a great job of preparing us for this game. It was just a great team effort. Everyone contributed to this win."
On coming back in the game with four minutes left:
"I was just trying to help my team in any way I could. Connecticut was gaining some momentum and I just wanted to get in there and help my team any way I could."

UConn Head Coach Jim Calhoun
On the game:
"First thing, I want to congratulate Kelvin and his kids. They did a great job defensively getting us out of rhythm. We didn't give Okafor the ball enough and I thought Tony Robertson was magnificent. This was certainly a step-up game as we get ready for conference play. Their defense disrupted us offensively and it only got worse during the second half. Clearly, they are a very good team. They are more mature than us. We just didn't have some of the things we need to win a Big East Championship tonight. They did a terrific job and should be congratulated.
On OU's defense:
"I think some of our youth showed and some of the older players deviated from their normal shots. Kelvin Sampson does a great job. His teams are known for their mental toughness. They stay within their offense and are always mentally and physically tough."
On Ben Gordon:
"Ben stopped himself tonight. I was really surprised with some of the shots that he took. You don't shoot a finger roll over a 6-11 guy. He played a poor game. He's a wonderful player but he took himself out of the game. You have to give credit to their kids. I give credit to OU."
"Oklahoma is good. The backcourt is as good as last year. I don't know if they are quite as good as last year, but they are definitely a top-10 team."
