NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team fell shy of upsetting Big 12 Conference leader and 42nd-ranked Kansas State Saturday in a 5-4 match in Manhattan, Kan.
Kansas State extends its winning streak to nine matches and takes sole possession of first place in the conference with a 7-0 record. KSU also goes to 13-4 overall. The Sooners drop to 5-10 and 0-6.
Oklahoma was down 4-2 after the singles matches were completed at the Washburn Tennis Facility. However, OU's junior Viviana Mracnova and senior Angela Stroup tighten the score with an 8-4 win over Petra Sedlmajerova and Eva Novotna at No. 1 doubles. In a seesaw battle at the No. 2 doubles, senior Kristin Guilford and freshman Melissa Mendiela ousted KSU's Alena Jecminkova and Anna Pampoulova, 9-7, evening the score at 4-4. For the match, Kathy Chuda and Natalia Farmer defeated Sooners Joni Helleland and Stephanie Sajbert, 8-3.
In singles action, Oklahoma picked up wins at the No. 1 and 6 positions. Mracnova cruised by KSU's top singles player, Sedlmajerova, 6-3, 6-2, while Sajbert won in three sets against Farmer, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 at the bottom of the lineup.
Oklahoma continues its Big 12 Conference road journey as OU faces Missouri (4-12, 1-8 Big 12) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Columbia, Mo. The Tigers lost to Oklahoma State, 8-1, Saturday at the MU Outdoor Tennis Complex.
