This Week in Sooner Tennis: The 53rd-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team (2-0) begins week two of the season by facing state foe Oral Roberts, Bradley and Cameron. OU travels to Tulsa Friday for a 6 p.m. match against the Golden Eagles, who are 2-2 on the young season. Since 2000, Oklahoma has dominated ORU, winning all seven matches by a combined score of 42-5. The Sooners will face ORU inside the Tulsa Southern Tennis Club located at 3030 E. 91st St. Admission is free.

The Sooners will then move on to compete in a double header on Sunday, Feb. 6 in Edmond, Okla., inside the Oak Tree Country Club. OU will square off against Bradley (1-1) at 9 a.m., followed by a 3:30 match against Cameron.  OU is the second half of a double header for Cameron’s season opener. Weather permitting, OU will play Cameron in Norman at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Admission to Sunday’s matches are free.

Last Time Against the Golden Eagles: OU dominated regional opponent ORU last season. The Sooners didn’t allow the Golden Eagles to score a single point  in the two meetings.  OU has not lost to ORU under head coach Paul Lockwood’s guidance. 

Last Time Against Bradley:  Oklahoma has never played Bradley. The Sooners look to start the series with a win.

Last Time Against Cameron:  OU swept Cameron last season 7-0 and defeated the Aggies in 2003, 6-1. Prior to the past two years the Sooners have not played Cameron since 1996.

Last Week’s Recap: Oklahoma cruised to two easy victories to open the 2005 spring slate. OU started things off with a pair of 5-2 wins over Northwestern and DePaul last weekend at the Combe Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill.

Senior Ondrej Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison  posted a 2-0 record as a doubles team. Fukala also went 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position. Junior Alexei Ivanov also earned two victories at No. 3 singles play. OU freshmen newcomer Ryan Thomas posted his first wins as a sooner in the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles with Ivanov.

Sooners Back In The National Rankings: The Sooners fought their way back into the ITA rankings after a successful fall season. The Sooners started the season ranked 66th and are now ranked 53rd. OU will play several ranked opponents this season including Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

OU Newcomers: The Sooners welcome three newcomers to this year’s team. Freshmen Ryan Thomas, Federico Chavarria and Razvan Axente. Thomas picked up his first wins of the season in opening weekend action.

Head Coach Paul Lockwood:  Paul Lockwood begins his 18th season as Oklahoma head men’s tennis coach. The OU graduate has compiled an overall record of 251-160 and claimed the Big Eight conference title in 1992. Lockwood was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1992 for his outstanding commitment to Sooner tennis. Lockwood’s teams have also earned eight Academic ITA All-America team honors (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004).
