NORMAN, Okla. The No. 31 Oklahoma men’s tennis team fell to No. 12 Oklahoma State, 5-2, in their final home match of the season. The match began April 10, but was postponed twice due to rain.

Oklahoma resumed play from April 10 and started off trailing in all three doubles matches. OU took the win at No. 2 doubles and the Pokes took the win at No. 3.

The doubles point was decided in a long match at the No. 1 slot. Junior Federico Chavarria and sophomore Rob McKenzie downed No. 40 doubles tandem of Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Daniel Byrnes. Oklahoma began the match trailing OSU 2-1. The OU duo came back to win the match in a tie breaker, 9-8 (12-10), securing the doubles point for the Sooners.

In singles play senior Marek Velicka was the only OU player to win his match. At the No. 3 slot, Velicka squared off against Byrnes. Velicka got an early lead, winning the first set 6-4, but Byrnes evened the score with a 6-1 win in the second frame. Velicka came back in the final set (6-3) to win the match.

No. 117 freshman Andrei Daescu faced No. 29 Ivan Puchkarov at the No. 2 slot. Daescu was the only other Sooner to take a match to three sets.

At the No. 1 slot, No. 60 freshman Vaclav Kucera lost a tough match to Oklahoma State's No. 25 freshman Nedovyesov. The first set went back and forth between the two players and was decided by a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2). Kucera could not come back from behind and lost second set 4-6.

Sophomore Rob McKenzie fell to OSU's Dmytro Petrov in a close match at the No. 4 slot, losing 7-6, 7-5.

“I’m disappointed because I think we had some opportunities to score,” said  OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood. “If we would have won the tie breakers we could have had the chance to win. OSU is a great team. It was a tough loss, but we will have the opportunity to bounce back from this.”

The match was originally scheduled to be played at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center, but was moved to the indoor courts at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City after storms hit Norman.

The Sooners are 17-7 on the season and 1-4 in Big 12 play.

The Sooners will play its final conference match Thursday in Kansas City prior to the start of tournament play. OU and Texas Tech were slated to play Friday, April 20, but postponed the match due to wind conditions.

The two teams will square off at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center. Results will be posted on SoonerSports.com as soon as they are available.

After Thursday, OU will remain in Kansas City for the Big 12 Championships, which run from April 27-29.
