EVANSTON, Ill. – OU women’s tennis senior Tara Eckel won two matches Saturday at Northwestern’s Wildcat Invitational to advance to Sunday’s consolation finals. The Sooners went a combined 5-6 on day two of the tournament.
Eckel defeated Rachel Denny of Western Michigan in the consolation quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-7 (6), 7-5, and went on to beat Emilie Renault of Minnesota in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-0. Eckel has played in four tiebreakers in five matches this weekend, winning all but one.
Eckel will play Elena Chernyakova of Northwestern on Sunday in the consolation finals.
Freshman Alice Radu and sophomore Brittany Parks both went 1-1 in singles on Saturday. Radu defeated Kaitlin Burns of LSU, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Alessandra Ferrazzi of Minnesota, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Parks lost to Nicky Stracar of Wisconsin, 7-5, 6-1, but went on to top Nini Sujashvili of Western Michigan, 6-3, 6-2.
RS-sophomore Peta Maree Lancaster went 0-2 Saturday, falling to Jana Knoppe of Illinois-Chicago, 7-5, 7-5, and Iowa’s Cassandra Escobar, 6-4, 6-4.
The Sooners went 1-2 in doubles on day two of the tournament. Eckel and Radu earned OU’s only doubles win on the day, defeating Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova and Nida Hamilton, 9-8 (5), in a match that started on Friday but was suspended due to darkness.
The Sooners will finish the final rounds of singles and doubles competition on Sunday.
