NORMAN, Okla. The Chicago Sky of the WNBA have invited former Sooner basketball player Chelsi Welch to training camp for the upcoming 2007 season.

As a training camp invitee, Welch will try out for the team with the hope of earning one of 13 roster spots.

Welch will be reunited with former OU assistant coach Bo Overton, who is now the GM/Head Coach of the franchise, and Sooner legend and ESPN personality Stacy Dales.

“I’m excited and bit nervous, but I think I am in a great position,” said Welch.  “I am fortunate enough to have played for Coach Bo and I know what he expects from his players.  I know Stacy well and am excited about the opportunity to train and play alongside her.”

Camp opens for the Chicago Sky on April 23.  The roster will be cut down to 15 players by May 1.  Final roster cuts are made May 18.

The Sky play their first exhibition game on May 2 against Phoenix in Chicago.

“This is a great opportunity for Chelsi,” said OU head coach Sherri Coale.  “She is one of the most competitive athletes I have coached. She will go out there and give it every ounce of effort she has.”

Welch finished her career 18th on the OU scoring list with 1,186 points.  During her senior season she averaged 9.1 points and posted career bests in field goal percentage (.453) and 3-point percentage (.452).  Welch led the Big 12 in three-point percentage this season and is the OU career leader in free throw percentage (.855).

Fellow class of 2007 senior Leah Rush was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury with the 28th pick last week.  While Rush was drafted, she is in a similar situation to Welch because she does not have a guaranteed contract.
