IRVING, Texas – Sophomore gymnast Sara Stone was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week by the conference office Tuesday afternoon, pushing OU’s streak to four consecutive weekly awards.
Stone is the sixth different Oklahoma gymnast to garner the award this season, breaking the previous Big 12 record also set by the Sooners in 2008.
Stone joins previous OU weekly conference honorees Jackie Flanery (Jan. 12), Hollie Vise (Jan. 26), Megan Ferguson (Feb. 9), Kristin Smith (Feb. 16) and Natasha Kelley (Feb. 23), as the Sooners have garnered the accolade on six of a possible eight occasions.
The Dallas native landed a perfect 10.0 on vault in OU’s 196.825-194.125 win at No. 23 Michigan last Friday, becoming the first underclassman in the NCAA this season to accomplish the mark.
Stone’s event title led Oklahoma to its seventh straight victory over a top-25 opponent. It was the Sooners’ 11th perfect score in program history and the first since 2008.
She is currently tied for No. 17 nationally on vault with a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 9.87.
Stone and the second-ranked Sooners return to Lloyd Noble for the most anticipated home meet in program history in a battle with No. 1 Alabama on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m.
