LAS VEGAS, Nev. Clinching its second straight win of the day, the No. 12 Oklahoma softball team run-ruled Southern Utah, 9-0, after five innings at the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic late Saturday evening in Las Vegas, Nev. The Sooners pushed their record to 3-1 on the season.
Sophomore Stacy Braddock pitched the shutout and earned her first win of the season. Through four innings of work, she only allowed two hits while fanning seven batters. Freshman D.J. Mathis pitched the fifth and final inning and allowed no hits.
Oklahoma wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as lead off batter Norrelle Dickson reached base on a walk and was followed by a Kristin Vesely single. After a double steal by the All-American duo, sophomore Savannah Long’s RBI off a fielder’s choice scored Dickson. Next, junior Mariee Mena’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Vesely and gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead.
The Sooners added another run in the third inning after Amber Spaulding singled and an error by the UNLV left fielder scored freshman catcher Samantha Ricketts, who had reached base on a walk.
The highlight of the night came in the fourth inning when junior Stacia Aleman sent a grand slam towering over left field to give the Sooners a 7-0 lead. It marked the second grand slam of her career and only the third home run of her career.
Aleman’s home run sparked a string of four straight hits for the Sooners, capped off by a Jessica Legendre double to score Ricketts and Spaulding. Legendre, a freshman shortstop, recorded her first career extra base hit with the double.
The Sooners face Long Beach State Sunday at 12 p.m. (CST) in OU’s final game of the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic. The 49ers are 2-2 at the tournament, losing to No. 13 Washington and Kentucky and taking wins over Illinois-Chicago and Southern Utah.
