Sooners Finish Day One of Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team won four matches on day one of Northwestern University's Wildcat Invitational as Peta Maree Lancaster and Brittany Parks advance to the singles quarterfinals.

Lancaster defeated April Kerr of Western Michigan in singles flight A to move on to Saturday's quarterfinals.  Lancaster dropped the first set, 6-7 (5), but forced the tiebreaker set after winning the second 7-6 (7).  The OU RS-sophomore took the third set, 6-3, and will play Jana Knoppe of Illinois-Chicago in the quarterfinals.

Parks also advances to the singles flight A quarterfinals after topping Michigan State's Michaela Silesova, 6-4, 6-4. Parks will face Nicky Stracar of Wisconsin on Saturday.

Tara Eckel and Alice Radu lost in the first round of singles Friday.  Eckel dropped a hard-fought match to Elisa Simonetti of Illinois-Chicago, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (4), while Radu fell to Lynn Poggensee-Wei of Iowa, 6-3, 6-3.  Both Sooners will compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday, Eckel will play Rachel Denny of Western Michigan while Radu will face LSU's Kaitlin Burrns.

In doubles the Sooners picked up two wins, while one match was suspended. 

Lancaster and partner Parks defeated Emilie Renault and Mariana Spilica of Minnesota in the first round of doubles flight B, 8-5, but lost to Jill Pastunink and Maria Nivia of Western Michigan, 8-4, in the semifinals.

Lancaster and Parks will face Angela Chupa and Jenny Hois of Wisconsin on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Radu and Eckel also won in the first round, topping Jessica Young and Alexis Dorr of Iowa, 8-4.  The OU duo fell behind Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova and Nida Hamilton in the semifinals, 5-4, but the match was suspended due to darkness.  The match will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
