NORMAN, Okla. - For the third straight season, a member of the Sooner soccer team was selected by the Big 12 coaches' as a preseason honoree. Junior Caitlin Mooney was named one of the team's forwards on Thursday a year after she selected as part of the All-Big 12 Newcomer team.

Whitney Palmer, OU's all-time leading scorer, appeared on the preseason squad in 2010 and 2009.

In 2010, Mooney finished second on the team in scoring with seven goals and three assists. It marked her first season in Norman after transferring from Maryland. The Edmond, Okla., native helped lead the Terrapins to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2009 as a true freshman with four goals scored and an assist.

For the Sooners, Mooney played in all 23 games with 22 starts. She began her career with a bang, scoring a hat trick in the second half of an exhibition game against Northern Colorado.

Mooney was named the 2010 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for Oct. 8-10 after scoring a pair of goals against Francis Marion and Kansas. She also scored the game-winning goal against SFA, at UCSB and versus Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship. She recorded her first career Big 12 goal at Iowa State and found the back of the net at Texas A&M.

Mooney and the rest of the 2011 Sooner soccer team reported to campus last week and already faces its first test this Saturday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game at Arkansas.

The season opener is slated for Friday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Sooners will play five of their first six games at home, including a matchup with Tennessee on Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
