NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team begins the spring season with a duel against the University of Tennessee Jan. 20-21 near San Diego, Calif.
This marks the first time that OU has competed in a match play event under sixth-year head coach Jim Ragan.
The Volunteers boast a team that ranks in the top 10 in both the GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll and the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings.
Competing for Oklahoma will be seniors Justin Fraley, Shawn LaFontaine and Brodie Flanders, junior Nick Sheedy, and sophomore Phillip Bryan.
LaFontaine was the Sooners’ most consistent player in the fall, posting a three-round total of 222 at both the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges and the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
This weekend’s match will feature a Ryder Cup-style format with 18 holes played Friday and 18 holes on Saturday.
Friday’s matches will be held at The Crosby National Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, with the Saturday rounds at Aviara Golf Course in nearby Carlsbad.
The Sooners’ competitive schedule picks up in February as they head to Hawaii for the Big Island Intercollegiate Feb. 8-10, then continue their west coast swing with a trip to Los Angeles for the Ashworth Invitational Feb. 27-28.
