Golf Headed for NCAA Central Regional
May 17, 2006

NORMAN, Okla. The Big 12 champion University of Oklahoma men’s golf team is headed to the NCAA Central Regional at the 7,173-yard, par-71 Sand Ridge Golf Club outside of Cleveland, Ohio, May 18-20.  The event will be hosted by Cleveland State University.

OU will be led by two-time All-American Anthony Kim, as well as Big 12 runner-up Brodie Flanders.  Seniors Shawn LaFontaine and Justin Fraley and sophomore Phillip Bryan complete the Sooner squad.

Kim, who missed last week’s Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate to attend the Ben Hogan Award banquet at Colonial Country Club, won both the Ashworth Invitational (Feb. 27-28) and the Hall of Fame Invitational (March 17-19) on his way to earning consensus All-Big 12 honors.

A native of Petitcodiac, New Brunswick, Flanders has turned it on down the stretch this season, recording a career-best second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships at Southern Hills (April 24-25).  Flanders also recorded a career-low round of 67 in the second round at The Maxwell en route to another top-10 individual finish.

LaFontaine and Bryan each recorded the highest finish of their Sooner careers at the Big 12 Championships.

LaFontaine, from Cobourg, Ontario, shared the first-round lead with Flanders after an opening 69.  He finished with a three-round total of 216 (+6) to tie for ninth place.

Bryan turned in a pair of one-over-par 71s in the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 11th.  The Mustang, Okla., native also turned in a solid performance at The Maxwell by finishing in 13th overall, just one shot out of a tie for 10th.

Fraley, who has started each of the Sooners’ nine events this season, was OU’s high finisher at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate (April 3-4), tying for 10th place.

The 27-team Central Regional will feature an outstanding field, including four teams ranked in the top 10 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Ratings (No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 Clemson).

The top 10 teams, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams, will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 31-June 3 at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.
