PORTLAND, Ore. - Defending champion Hunter Haas was eliminated in the second round of match play at the 75th U.S. Amateur Public Links championship at the 6,969-yard, par-72 Great Blue Course at Heron Lakes. Haas, 23, was defeated by Jered Gusso, 21, of Savage, Minn., 2 up.
Haas, who is scheduled to turn professional next week at the B.C. Open, was 2-down with five holes to play but evened the match by winning No.14 and 15 with pars. He then bogeyed No.16, halved No.17 with a par and conceded No.18.
"I'm disappointed in the way that I played, but Jered took advatange of my mistakes all day," noted the defending champion. "I haven't been playing my best golf recently but I thought my swing was beginning to come back. To be honest, I was looking forward to winning this event again and having the hard choice of whether the turn professional or stay an amateur. Now, I'll make the move and try to take my game to the next level."
The U.S. Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
