TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma baseball team fell to No. 16 Oklahoma State 5-1 in the Bedlam series opener Friday evening at ONEOK Field.

The Sooners (30-19, 8-11 Big 12) scored a run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Tyler Hardman, who was 2-for-3 at the plate. The Cowboys (29-16, 11-8 Big 12) hit four solo home runs, including three in the first inning. OU starter Nathan Wiles (7-3) struck out seven batters and allowed three earned runs over 7.0 innings while Jensen Elliott (7-3) allowed five hits in the complete-game win for OSU.

Oklahoma tied a school record in turning five double plays Friday. The defense spun twin killings in each of the third through sixth innings, then ended the top of the ninth with a line drive double play.

“Jenson Elliot was really good. You’ve got to tip your hat to him,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “They got a few balls up early in the game, then I thought Nate settled in and our defense played really well. We didn’t sustain any rallies throughout the game. We kind of got one going in the ninth and Hardman hit a ball hard, but we just couldn’t sustain a rally.”

OU turned a variety of double plays in the game. Wiles started a 1-4-3 double play to end the third, shortstop Brandon Zaragoza took a grounder to second himself and turned two in the fourth, second baseman Conor McKenna started a 4-6-3 twin killing in the fifth and third baseman Brylie Ware went around the horn to end the sixth. Hardman fielded a line drive and fired to Ware to double a runner off third to end the top of the ninth.

Hardman drove a sacrifice fly to deep center field in the bottom of the ninth to score Jordan Vujovich and help the Sooners avoid a shutout. Vujovich led off the ninth with a pinch hit single and Ware followed with a base hit. Hardman’s single in the fifth inning was OU’s first hit, and he added a base hit in the seventh. Center fielder Tanner Tredaway singled in the sixth inning.

OSU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on consecutive solo home runs by third baseman Christian Funk, catcher Collin Simpson and shortstop Andrew Navigato. Funk homered in the fifth, and first baseman Alix Garcia singled in a run in the ninth.

The Sooners and Cowboys continue the Bedlam series Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
