Sooners Drop Opener at Junkanoo Jam
BIMINI, Bahamas — Oklahoma dropped its opener at the Junkanoo Jam on Thursday, falling to UAB, 89-84, in Bimini, Bahamas.
The Sooners (2-2) could not overcome UAB's (4-0) 12 3-pointers as OU fell to 6-3 all-time at the Junkanoo Jam. With the loss, OU will play Clemson on Friday at 6:45 p.m. CT.
Freshman Madi Williams led the Sooners with a season-high 22 points and eight rebounds. Williams finished 7-of-13 from the floor and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe against the Blazers. The freshman scored 19 of her 22 points in the second half.
Jessi Murcer and Taylor Robertson both scored 17 points. Murcer was 7-of-10 from the field and also added a career-high eight rebounds off the bench in 31 minutes of action. Robertson finished 4-of-10 from the field with two treys, but was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line. The McPherson, Kan., native also pulled down three rebounds and recorded two assists. Sophomore guard Shaina Pellington added 12 points, three assists and three steals.
The Sooners grabbed an early lead on the opening tip-off as Pellington quickly scored with a lay-in off the glass. UAB responded and took the lead for good, knocking down six treys in the first half to build a six-point halftime lead.
Williams opened the second half with eight points as OU tied the game at 55-55 with 3:55 to play in the frame, but the Blazers scored the final five points of the third quarter to take a seven-point lead into the final stanza.
Williams brought the Sooners within one point of the Blazers, sinking a pair of free throws at the 1:09 mark in the fourth quarter. UAB responded with 3-pointer from Deanna Kuzmanic and closed out the game at the free throw line.
OU finished with a .484 shooting percentage, while posting a season-low .176 clip from 3-point range. The Sooners edged UAB on the glass, 38-37, and recorded a season-low 11 turnovers. UAB finished with a .485 field goal clip, knocking down 12-of-36 (.333) from deep and posting a .765 mark at the free throw line.
The Sooners' freshman class combined to score 57 of OU's 84 points against UAB.
Katelynn Thomas led the Blazers with 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting. Rachael Childress hit four triples and scored 18 points, while Miyah Barnes chipped in 15 points and a team-high seven assists.
Friday's game against Clemson will mark the first matchup between the Sooners and Tigers. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
