NORMAN –  A trio of Oklahoma freshmen competed at the World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn. Jakob Woodley, Jake Boyd and Dom Demas all represented the Sooners at the national competition.

The tournament brought together the best junior wrestlers from around the country who vied for a spot on the US Junior National and World team.

Demas qualified for the national team after he defeated Andrew Alirez (Northern Colorado) in a best-of-three championship matchup at 65 kg. Alirez picked up the first victory, winning by major decision, 12-2. The Columbus, Ohio, native bounced back with an impressive 10-3 victory in the second match. The redshirt freshman took the lead late in the first period with a takedown, making the score 3-2. Demas did not look back after the first, controlling the match the rest of the way and forcing a third contest. In a decisive third match, Demas won in convincing fashion, clinching his spot on the US U20 World Team with a 8-1 victory. He will compete at the World Championships in Slovakia this September.

Woodley, who competed at 92 kg, started his day with a convincing 9-3 victory over Jacob Raschka (MWRTC). The Pittsburgh, Pa. native, took down Raschka twice in the first period and followed it with five points in the final period. In the semifinals of the challenge tournament, Woodley claimed another victory, this time defeating Alexander Hopkins (Army West Point) 6-2. Woodley never trailed and dominated the match, taking down Hopkins three times. He advanced to the challenge tournament championship and fell to John Borst in a tightly contested matchup, 7-6.

Boyd, a Smithville, Mo., native, picked up a victory in his opening bout against Cale Davidson (WWRTC), 3-1, but fell in his second match to Zach Elam (TCWC), 5-2.

For their performance at the competiton, both Boyd and Woodley qualified for the U20 National Team.

Boyd, Demas and Woodley all redshirted for OU this season, but have found success in national competition this offseason. Each competed at the 2018 Marine Cup US Open Wrestling Championships, where Woodley placed third at 92 kg and Boyd picked up a pair of victories. Demas finished as the runner-up at the event at 62 kg.

Some OU wrestlers continue their busy offseason with the University Nationals in Akron, Ohio, June 1-4.
