DALLAS – A pitcher’s duel through six innings went the wrong way for the University of Oklahoma baseball team in a 5-2 loss to No. 24 Dallas Baptist at Horner Ballpark on Tuesday night. The Sooners dropped to 4-5, while the Patriots improved to 4-3.

The Sooners scored first and needed just one hit to push a run across in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Brandon Zaragoza (Moore, Okla.) hit a one-out double and scored from third on a fielder’s choice hit into by junior right fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas).

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nathan Wiles (Overland Park, Kan.) kept DBU off the board through the first five innings. He erased a leadoff-single in the sixth with a double play before being lifted after a two-out single by Patriots catcher Matt Duce. Dallas Baptist then tied the game on a hard single past the glove of Zaragoza.

Free passes foiled the Sooner bullpen in the seventh as DBU took the lead with four consecutive walks to open the frame. The Patriots plated three runs in the inning without a hit; running two more across on a passed ball and a wild pitch as OU needed four pitchers in a 36-minute half inning.

Lefty Kody Funderburk allowed just one unearned run on one hit and one walk in five innings for Dallas Baptist in a no-decision. He batted seventh for the Patriots and was 1-for-3 with an eighth-inning solo home run. Right-hander Kragen Kechely (1-0) got the win in 0.2 innings of relief.

Oklahoma put together a ninth-inning rally beginning with a leadoff-home run by redshirt-sophomore center fielder Kyler Murray (Allen, Texas); his second homer of the season. Junior third baseman Brylie Ware (Sedgwick, Kan.) then popped a double into right-center with one out, but was stranded at third.

Junior RHP Austin Hansen (Lenexa, Kan.) took the loss in just 0.1 inning of work with a run charged against him on one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

The Sooners begin a 13-game homestand on Friday, March 2 as the welcome Alabama for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
