Sooners Place Fourth at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. — The Oklahoma wrestling team claimed fourth place in the competitive Virginia Duals, dropping two matches with top-11 opponents in the championship bracket on Saturday inside Hampton Coliseum. 

OU was defeated by No. 9 Virginia Tech (32-3) in the semifinals and No. 11 Northern Iowa (25-9) in the third-place dual. The Sooners finished the 13-team event with a 3-2 record overall. 

Redshirt sophomore Christian Moody (125 pounds) was undefeated on the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record, including an upset win on Saturday. 

The Sooners return home on Jan. 21 to take on Northern Colorado at 2:45 p.m. CT. The dual will be held at Lloyd Noble Center in conjunction with OU women's gymnastics as a part of the Beauty and the Beast meet. Fans can purchase tickets online or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (405) 325-2424.

No. 9 Virginia Tech 32, Oklahoma 3

No. 19 Moody claimed the Sooners’ sole win of the dual, defeating Kyle Norstrem by 5-3 decision at 125 pounds. The Sooner built a 2-1 lead in the first period and extended his advantage to 3-1 with an escape in the second. Moody used a third-period takedown to secure the win.

At 133 pounds, Jake Rubio narrowly dropped a competitive contest to No. 13 Dennis Gustafson, 4-2. Mike Longo was downed by Brent Moore in a technical fall, 16-0, at 141 pounds. In the 149-pound bout, Davion Jeffries fell to Ryan Blees in the first sudden-victory period, 6-4. Justin Thomas was edged by B.C. LaPrade, 3-2, at 157 pounds. 

At 165 pounds, Dawaylon Barnes dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 4 David McFadden. In his first bout of the weekend, Jeremy Thomas was defeated by Cody Hughes at 174 pounds, 6-2. Matthew Waddell was downed by No. 8 Zach Zavatsky in a 13-2 major decision. Andrew Dixon dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to No. 2 Jared Haught. At heavyweight, Connor Webb was defeated by No. 18 Andrew Dunn in a 14-4 major decision.

No. 11 Northern Iowa, 25, Oklahoma 9 

Moody secured his perfect weekend with an upset of No. 12 Jay Schwarm at 125 pounds. After building a 2-0 lead in the first period, Moody added an escape and two takedowns in the second period to create a 7-1 advantage with one period remaining. He added the riding-time point to earn the 8-4 decision.

Rubio added three more points for the Sooners with an 8-7 decision over Jack Wagner at 133 pounds. Rubio earned a 2-0 advantage in the first frame and led 6-4 after the second. Despite a late comeback effort from Wagner in the final period, Rubio secured the riding-time point to edge his opponent and finish the event with a 4-1 record. 

Barnes took down Isaiah Patton in a 3-2 decision at 165 pounds. He recorded a takedown in the first period and added an escape in the second to claim the win.

In a high-scoring 141-pound bout, Longo dropped a 16-10 decision to No. 8 Josh Alber. Jeffries was narrowly edged by No. 7 Max Thomsen, 3-2, at 149 pounds. At 157 pounds, Justin Thomas was defeated by Logan Ryan in a 3-1 decision. 

Jeremy Thomas was pinned in 3:52 by No. 7 Taylor Lujin in the 174-pound match. At 184 pounds, Waddell was defeated by No. 11 Drew Foster in a 14-4 major decision. Dixon dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 19 Jacob Holschlag at 197 pounds. In the heavyweight match, Marquise Overton was downed by Carter Isley, 9-5.
